The Vancouver Giants won the 2007 Memorial Cup yesterday beating the Medecine Hat Tigers 3-1. Yesterdays game was the ninth time these two have met in the last month or so.
As expected it was a very tight, low scoring game. Memorial Cup MVP Milan Lucic was a force, especially in the first period when it looked like he was the guy who wanted to win the most. Lucic really stood out finishing every check and going full tilt without taking a dumb penalty. He even squared off against Tiger defenceman Jordan Bendfeld. Bendfeld couldn't stand watching Lucic continue to take out his teamates. Bendfeld should have been asessed an instigator penalty. This was one of a handful of bad or missed calls by the officiating crew in the first half of the game. They did manage to pull it together in the second and third period.
Two other players that stood out were Darren Helm and Matthew Keetley of the Tigers. Darren Helms great speed and puck control gave the Giants the most trouble. He set up and scored Medecine Hat's only goal, a beautiful read and then a give and go with teamate Derek Dorsett. Keetley stopped 37 shots and looked very composed the whole time.
I'm stoked the Giants won, I support the team by attending games every year since their inseption 6 years ago. Is this Vancouvers first hockey championship?
Go Sens!
