Since moving up to The Bulkley Valley 2 years ago I see most movies on dvd months after their theatre release dates.
One of these movies is Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman & Amy Adams.
I had seen the trailer for this movie quite awhile ago and thought it seemed pretty dark and heavy. Also the fact that Doubt is set within the realm of the Catholic ministry didn't make it seem that appealing either.
But, after having one of those days at the video store where nothing seems viewable you break down. What's on the rack?
You have to figure with the assembled cast, Doubt must have some good qualities.
It does. For starters, Doubt looks amazing. Whoever is the D.O.P.(?) is a master. Every scene looks great.
Set in 1964, the story centers on a nun who confronts a priest after suspecting him of abusing a black student. He denies the charges, and much of the play's quick-fire dialogue tackles themes of religion, morality, and authority. Doubt starts slow and climaxes on a complex set of allegations and assumptions held by a religion that is based on old ideas.
The story is as much about a priest within the church starting to challenge the catholic ideals as it is about child abuse.
Great acting (obviously) and a real trip into heart of a 1964 Catholic school dealing with their first black student and an over protective priest.
Not for everyone. But if you like it serious every now and then maybe you will. I did.

Hey Muc, the DOP was the esteemed Roger Deakins. A few years ago I got to work with him on The Assassination of Jesse James and the job took me back to Edmonton. Sure looked different from when I left in 1988.

Hope you are well,
Pat Hogue
